November 16, 2008: Dr. Loa Traxler will lecture on the fascinating royal imagery and life style of the Maya Kings of Copan and Their Classic Acropolis
December 7, 2008: Janet Goldner will capture our attention in an illustrated lecture on the rich and colorful AfricanArt and Life of Mali.
A 1995 Fullbright Senior Research Fellowship has allowed this renowned artist and sculptor to travel to Mali every year. Like most of Africa, colonization disrupted the native art work in Mali. Today natives are working together to bring techniques of art that are centuries-old into the 21st Century, free of restrictions other than their imaginations. During her countless trips to Mali, she has witnessed pottery makers (usually women) and artists who put their work not on canvas to be hung over a fireplace, but on garments worn every day. Janet Goldner has been traveling to Mali since 1973. She has lectured widely about a culture in sub-Saharan Africa that has been dated to the 3rd century B.C. and may have started as early as 900 B.C.
Our neighboring AIA - Long Island Society is offering a public lecture on Sunday, November 16 at 2PM on Neanderthal-Modern Human Interaction by Dr. Daniel Shawn Adler. For details, please visit www.aia-lis.org.
AIA-LIS will end the year with their annual Study Group presentation on December 14 entitled Adornment in the Ancient World: Tattoos, Cosmetics and Feathers.
