Your Society has planned a series of exciting illustrated lectures for the 2009-2010 academic year. Join us as we explore topics ranging from the archaeology of Afghanistan to the rise of Christianity, from mummification to making the dead speak! Our lecturers are outstanding scholars from leading academic institutions throughout the United States funded by the Archaeological Institute of America, the New York State Council for the Humanities and your local Society. Meet the lectures over coffee/tea and cake follow each presentation. Don't be bashful about asking questions. Plan to participate! Lectures

Coming Attractions

 

February 21, 2010: Dr. Celeste Gagnon, a member of our own Wagner faculty, will enlighten us on her research into gender and inequality evident in early South American civilizations. Her lecture is entitled Making the Dead Speak: Moche Valley.

March 21, 2010: Dr. Jose Moreno-Lacalle will captivate us with the great debate going on in modern archaeology between reconstructionist and preservationist. Should the Titanic have been brought up or left in situ? Should the 'missing pieces' of the Athenian Parthenon be filled-in or not? To find out the pros and cons of these processes, attend the lecture entitled Resolving Archaeology: Tenets and Technologies.

April 25, 2010: Join us when Dr. Douglas K. Charles provides an illustrated lecture on the effects of climate change entitled Rising from the Waters: The Origins of the HOPEWELL PHENOMENON. He discusses the impact of major flooding and rainfall upon an early Mississippi River civilization from 1000-600 B.C.
